The number one question we get from clients who want to know about building ADUs is cost. Because you are essentially building an entirely new house—though on a smaller scale—construction costs for a custom ADU built with HDR Remodeling averaged between $400-500k and $800-1000 per square foot in the Bay Area in 2020. As expected, more amenities and utilities increases the cost logarithmically due to all of the systems and upgrades required to construct a dwelling that meets building codes.
