Urban Studio Garage Conversion
Like so many young people, this couple on the city/island of Alameda near Oakland wanted to make as much as possible of their first small starter home. They looked no farther than their back yard. There was an existing duplex garage that was shared with their neighbors. The structure had not been improved since the houses was built in the 20’s.
The clients had lived in their Oakland home for a years while their family grew in size. The home’s outside available space was limited to a narrow sloped hillside. The key design challenge was easy access to a level play space for kids and comfortable outdoor entertainment space for the adults.
For decades, the old garage was full of stuff that the couple took to Burning Man plus an old canoe. Finally it was just too much. The client contacted HDR Remodeling to help them repurpose the old space into habitable space including a bedroom, bath and extra storage. We were able to do this with a City of Berkeley permit and added the garage to the total home’s square footage dramatically increasing the home’s resale value.
