La Cresta Garage Conversion

BACKGROUND & DESIGN SOLUTIONS

This Oakland garage revnovation fulfilled a lot of needs for our clients. Our client is a large active family that loves the outdoors. They found that their garage space was inefficiently organized and overflowing with gear from their family activities. They needed a space that was multipurpose and more usable but also liveable. Their goals for the new finished garage space was to create space for storage, working, working out, and to share and relax together.

Creating a space with many uses, maximizing spatial efficiency, while simultaneously helping our clients organize and hide their storage requires a fine balance and creative thinking, and was a challenge we were up to!

As with most garage conversions, there were a lot of structural and infrastructure challenges to address to make it a comfortable and liveable space. The existing structure required foundation and roof work to make it structurally sound and protect it against earthquakes. We added a structural tie-rod to the ceiling to add lateral strength. The tie-rods also seconded as a design element to create a point of interest for the room.

We chose Stikwood planks and applied it across the accent wall and ceiling to give the space an elevated cabin feel. Matching this aesthetic is the barn door from Rustica that separates the living space from the family’s equipment and storage room. We finished with rustic light fixtures from Rejuvenation to tie the room together.

The large bifold doors from LaCANTINA allows for natural light to fill the space, and when fully opened, allows the family direct access to load and unload their outdoor equipment to and from the storage room. It also gives the garage a beautiful bridge between the indoor living space and the natural world. The results, a multi-functional, airy space for the whole family to enjoy.
