OAKLAND kitchen-dining room SWAP

2017 Remmies Award Winner - Judges Choice Award for Best Overall Project

In this inspired Oakland renovation, the large dining room and the smaller kitchen were swapped to provide the open concept feel and more casual dining experience this young family was looking for. The new larger kitchen opens up to the living room at one end and features beautiful french doors to the backyard at the other so small children are always within view. The smaller dining space provides a more casual dining experience without sacrificing the functionality of a formal dining room for larger family gatherings.

Background

Client requested a modernized aesthetic in keeping with the historical feel of the home. They asked for a place for the kids to sit at the kitchen counter and a dedicated space for cookbooks. The ability to cook dinner and keep an eye on the kids while they play in the back yard or in the living room was an important feature.
