How did you get your start in design?

Design has been a part of my life since childhood, starting with bedroom makeovers in my room where rearranging furniture was a recurring theme. This passion has continued into adulthood. Growing up in a family of trade workers, I was constantly immersed into the world of design.

This inspired me to pursue my career in design starting with an internship at an interior design firm. Doing what I love has led me to my role today as a Designer with HDR Remodeling.

How would you describe your personal style if you were to design your own home?

I would describe my style mainly as cottagecore with a touch of eclectic. Cottagecore is about simplicity, comfort, and the freedom of self expression. It’s a romantic, nature driven design trend with rustic touches that aesthetically, is a nod to the English Countryside and promotes slow-living.

It tends to lean more neutral in colors which is where the touch of eclectic comes into play for me. An eclectic design combines multiple styles using color, texture, and shapes. In a nutshell, I love surrounding myself with products and materials that make me happiest.

Where do you look for inspiration for your work?

I look for inspiration within our clients. How they have furnished and decorated their home, whether curated or not, tells a story about them. I aim to have my approach be inspired by the people i’m designing for.

What’s your dream project? Is there a type of project that you haven’t worked on yet but would like to?

I would love to design a space in an eclectic style filled with funky elements and bold colors. It’s not typically what people gravitate to and would be such a fun experience.

What is your favorite style of design?

My favorite style to design would have to be an eclectic space filled with funky elements and bold colors.

What is your approach to working with clients to help them uncover their design aesthetic?

Many clients already have a sense of their style coming into design but if they don’t have a strong direction we will typically put together a collection of different styles (modern, traditional, contemporary) and test what they are drawn to the most. We also ask clients to share any inspiration images they may have during design which typically allows us to get a read on their style as well.

The way we're living in our homes now has dramatically changed. We live, work, educate, there; we also entertain. How has this shifted your design process?

The emphasis is on creating functional, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing environments that cater to the diverse needs of modern living. Designers now need to create spaces that serve multiple purposes efficiently. This requires careful planning of layout, storage solutions, and furniture choices that can adapt to different uses. As homes become more central to our lives, designers are putting a greater emphasis on creating spaces that surround clients with personalized items that bring comfort and belonging.

If you could tell your clients one thing upfront, what would it be? / What is something you feel all clients should know when designing their home?

One important thing I'd tell clients upfront is to be open and honest about their needs, preferences, and budget from the beginning. Clear communication is key to creating a home that truly reflects their lifestyle and personality. It helps me as a Designer to understand what's most important to them so I can tailor the design to their expectations and practical considerations. Being transparent and open about your vision and practical constraints ensures we can work together effectively to create a space you'll love living in.

What is a passion of yours outside of design?

I have a constant yearning for creativity and thoroughly enjoy engaging in various crafts, from macramé and pottery to logo design and furniture flipping. Designing is an integral part of who I am, and I find immense joy in exploring these avenues of expression.
