MLK Berkeley KItchen

2016 Remmies Award Winner

Background

Our client had been living in the house for 15 years. They love their home, but did not like the disjointed layout that left their kids in the TV room separated by a wall from the kitchen. They wanted to expand and remodel their kitchen to meet the needs of their family by expanding the kitchen and adding an island for food prep and casual family meals. They also wanted to integrate the kitchen with the family room space for TV viewing and include an in-kitchen dining area and homework area for the kids. They worked with HDR Remodeling to design the backsplash behind the stove that is truly the statement piece of the kitchen.

HDR removed the wall between the kitchen and family room to enlarge the size of this Berkeley kitchen. The kitchen layout was reorganized to add a spacious island. We removed the laundry room and rear stairs to allow for a large window and an eat-in dining space. An informal breakfast nook for casual family meals or doing homework was incorporated in an inclusive manner with the kitchen. The homeowners were thrilled with this design element because they were able to cook for their children while they were in the same room. We relocated the refrigerator to enlarge the doorway to the dining room. The stove wall was removed in order to create an open floor plan that lead into the family room.

We were able to add a unique feature in the kitchen showcasing natural light as well as a pop of design with the backsplash behind the stove and range hood. The end result was an upgraded kitchen, extra storage and an in-kitchen dining and study area that was both kid and adult friendly!

When we were finished the clients said: “True professionals, so hard to find contractors with form, function and customer service”
