Acton Berkeley Bathroom Remodel
BACKGROUND & DESIGN SOLUTIONS
This Berkeley bathroom remodel was designed with care and intention, centered on creating a space that supports aging in place by prioritizing safety, comfort, and future flexibility. The design needed to be functional for today while also anticipating the possibility of caregiver assistance down the line.
Client Goals
The clients requested accessible grab bars throughout the bathroom, a curbless shower for unobstructed entry, a nature-inspired aesthetic, and a layout that worked within the existing footprint. Removing the exterior door also became essential to accommodate a full vanity and increase both wall space and circulation.
Key Design Highlights
- Curbless shower: Replacing the outdated clawfoot tub with a barrier-free, curbless shower created safe, easy access. Instead of glass doors, a simple shower curtain was used to avoid reflections and maintain an open, non-claustrophobic feel.
- Floating vanity: A streamlined vanity with a single-handle faucet improves accessibility while adding storage. Its floating design leaves clearance underneath for flexibility and easier caregiver access if needed.
- Nature-inspired finishes: Light green tiles in a modern vertical stack pattern brighten and visually expand the room. The green palette evokes the calming effects of the outdoors, promoting relaxation and mental well-being.
- Improved layout: Removing the exterior door allowed for a full vanity installation, maximizing functionality and providing more usable wall and walking space.
Challenges & Solutions
The original bathroom posed challenges with limited storage and difficulty accessing the shower. By installing a curbless, glass-free shower, we eliminated barriers and improved maneuverability. The new floating vanity resolved storage limitations while remaining easy to use. Every element of the remodel was thoughtfully considered through the lens of accessibility and future-proofing.
Results
The completed bathroom marries functionality with a serene, nature-inspired aesthetic. It provides a safe, accessible environment for daily use, supports the clients’ long-term needs, and offers peace of mind knowing the space is designed for both independence and assisted care if needed.
