We've done three construction projects in the past decade, two of them with different contractors and this most recent one with HDR, so we know when things aren't done well. HDR was responsive, they listened, and they did great work. Nothing is ever perfect - there was one sub that didn't do a good job. We didn't have to complain; HDR was on it and they made the sub come back and redo the work. That's the sign of a good contractor.

HDR helped us remodel our kitchen and two bathrooms. They were extremely professional and responsive throughout the whole process and did a beautiful job. Our architect, Milton, was great to work with - very responsive to our needs and vision for what the spaces should look like. My wife and I are thrilled to emphatically recommend HDR Remodeling to anyone considering them for a remodeling project! After interviewing several local full-service remodeling companies, we hired HDR to lead our whole home remodel, a significant 10-month project that brought our 1923 dilapidated Oakland home into the 21st century. We were sold by their warmth and professionalism, innovative perspective, and confidence to get the job done within the parameters we had in mind.

HDR took care of everything – the structural design and architecture, plans and permitting, interior/exterior design and aesthetics, project management, budget management… you name it, they did it.

Everyone working at HDR was honest, direct, collaborative, empathetic, and flexible. They were clean, thorough, attentive to detail, and as reliable as you could hope for in this wildly volatile industry. A project this size with this duration is bound to have its issues, and everyone was always pleasant to deal with even (and especially) in the hardest moments. On multiple occasions, they fixed problems at their own cost without trying to negotiate, went above and beyond in upgrading certain designs or materials without charging us, and were always transparent with pricing and options when we had to eat a change order. Don’t get me wrong – anyone taking on this kind of project should expect the timeline and budget to exceed the original projections – but this was way less painful than we feared, largely due to HDR’s professionalism and savvy.

Our project was quite massive for a relatively small Rockridge home. In 2017, we bought a 2 bed, 1 bathroom, 1500 sqft, split-story home that had significant damage requiring remedy (we were fully aware of upon purchase!). Roughly 1 year after we first engaged HDR, we moved back into our 3 bed, 2 bath, 1900 sqft home with the polish and preferences we always dreamed of. Suffice it to say HDR did a phenomenal job with everything. We would absolutely work with HDR again on our next project, and encourage you to give them a call!

This is our second large remodel with HDR. A few years ago they renovated the top floor of our house, and we recently had them back to work on the basement where we carved out a new bedroom from a family room...completely gutted and built a new bathroom, added built-in bookcases, and installed new oak trim throughout. We just completed a bathroom remodel with HDR Remodel and we are so happy with both the finished product and the experience. This was our first remodeling project/experience and they really guided us through it. Jim provided great design advice, and was very patient about providing us choices that worked with our budget. He offered lots of great suggestions along the way but always let us make the final decision, and never pressured us one way or the other. Jim was even completely understanding when I decided to contract out the frameless shower door myself to a glass company since they could do it much cheaper. Other than the shower door, his team took care of ordering all the materials and coordinating the work.

Before construction started, Philip made sure to spell out how they would access the house, how they would contain the area to minimize exposure of dust/dirt to the rest of the house, and asked us to share any concerns/apprehensions that we had so they could do their best to address/prevent them. Guillermo did most of the construction work and was fantastic. Throughout construction, all the workers were very respectful and tried to minimize disturbance to our daily lives, while still providing regular updates on progress or any issues. It was fun to come home each day and see how the bathroom was coming along. We felt we were in good hands the entire time, the job was well-coordinated, and the quality of their work really shows!

We are a growing family and needed a dedicated family room space. The contractor building it wasn't able to finish a downstairs space. It was basically a concrete box. No windows. A little greater than 200 sq ft. We wanted to convert this to a light filled family room and thought that given its relative seclusion, we could add a full bathroom in essence transforming it into an autonomous guest unit if needed. 

Our process began with Kevin, the designer. It actually began with interviewing a number of design build firms in the bay area, including some prominent architects. HDR was an easy choice from the outset. They sought my business and extended themselves in a professional and kind way. Working with Kevin was like finding a new hobby I never knew I was passionate about. He is a creative, proactive, budget conscious individual who is easy to work with. We had to compromise on some plans for a full entertainment center given the bathroom, but he found ways to optimize the extent space that amazed us. 

The build phase was exciting. We benefit from the fact that the remodel was downstairs and thus relatively isolated. Nevertheless we found ourselves purchasing an air purifier. Now matter the level of protection, its not a hermetic seal and so we had some dust. When we were concerned they went over and above to make it as safe as possible. 

The most important items that stood out to us were competency, communication and professionalism. Chris the bossman were on top of all three. They followed rules that maintained our privacy. When there were unforeseen issues, Chris would alert us and we would talk about it. It was all about sticking to a preordained budget.

Timeliness was also important. Even though the project went over by a couple of weeks, it was no unexpected and for reasons that demonstrated HDRs commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction. They were perfectionist about it. The smallest imperfection from a scratched faucet to minuscule divet in the dry wall was redone. The quality is there. The design came to life. 

Our bathroom is ridiculously awesome. A perfect combination of modern and industrial/rustic. I find myself walking all over the house clad in a towel just to use our new space! We are so excited. The new window bring in so much light. The white oak flooring is so warm and inviting. The space is not a basement. It is a continuation of the house and that is the highest compliment we can give them.

Whole Home Remodel in Oakland

We worked with HDR on three extensive phases of remodeling at our house. The work included converting a sauna to a laundry room, installing hardwood floors throughout the upper level of the house, redoing the layout of and revamping the kitchen, installing a new garage door, updating bathrooms, and redoing some of the exterior finish.
