The owners of this El Cerrito home returned to HDR Remodeling after a bathroom remodel years earlier. After years of frustration with the layout of their kitchen and living room, Our clients wanted an open concept space that would help them stay connected as a family and less disjointed from one room to the next when entertaining. However, they were hesitant about uprooting their current setup for the unknown.

HDR Remodeling employed a methodical design process to address our clients’ concerns. While the layout developed pretty quickly and easily, the details and finishes took more time to get exactly right. We provided photorealistic 3D renderings of the design to allow them to fully visualize the end results with zero ambiguity of what the remodel would look like.

The kitchen and living room sat on different floors and felt closed off from other parts of the house. The living room was also a much larger space than they needed and they preferred to increase the square footage of their kitchen and dining spaces. Because the family enjoyed spending time outdoors and entertaining, our solution was to flip the location of the kitchen and living room to make the spaces more functional for how the family lives and entertains.

We wanted to allow more openness between the living room, kitchen, and backyard so people could spread out across those spaces but still feel connected. For that reason, we opened the corner of the wall by the stairs to create more visually open space and installed iron railings by Quake City Metals for a softer separation of space. In the kitchen,we installed Caesarstone countertops and organized all of the kitchen cabinets along the walls so they did not create a division between the kitchen and dining area. In the new dining space, we added decorative light fixtures by Shimale Peleg for a focal centerpiece. The relationship of the kitchen to the dining room and living spaces keeps everyone in the mix during gatherings.

We designed one of the tall pantry cabinets to function more as a secondary workspace than just a storage space. It has retractable doors that open and fold away so you can work at the pantry without blocking the circulation path around the kitchen. There is a slide out shelf to use as a small counter or to place a small appliance, and a fixed shelf above where the microwave lives. This lets our clients keep small appliances—a food processor, a blender, and mixer — accessible for frequent use, but also allows them to stay hidden to keep the kitchen uncluttered.

Ultimately, the new layout made the house more open and welcoming while also creating more efficient dedicated spaces for gathering, cooking, movie watching, working, and relaxing.
