Montgomery Oakland Garage
BACKGROUND & DESIGN SOLUTIONS
This Oakland-based garage renovation transformed an underutilized, partially enclosed carport into a secure and stylish multi-functional garage. The homeowners envisioned a space that could accommodate their electric vehicle, offer seasonal storage, and double as a workout area—all while embracing a modern design sensibility.
To meet their top priorities, we enclosed the carport on all sides, creating a protected and secure environment. A key upgrade was the installation of an interior electric car charger, solving the inconvenience of charging from the driveway. We also designed an open-concept layout to keep the space feeling flexible and airy, ideal for storing gear like skis and tools while leaving room to move and exercise.
One of the defining aspects of the garage remodel was the clients’ request for an “unfinished, finished” interior. We achieved this by installing plywood walls throughout, balanced with crisp, painted trim around windows and doors. The result is a clean, intentional aesthetic that feels both raw and refined.
Budget-conscious yet design-driven, we preserved existing elements of the original structure—including the roof, skylights, ceiling rafters, and a single window—to maximize resources without compromising style. The moody exterior palette, featuring Benjamin Moore’s “Top Soil” for the base and “Black Top” on all trim, windows, and doors, gives the garage a bold, modern curb appeal. A newly added garden-facing window further enhances the space by bringing in natural light and a connection to the outdoors.
This thoughtful garage conversion delivered exactly what the clients needed: a secure, practical, and beautifully designed garage tailored to their multiple needs.
