This backyard studio project gave our client something she had long been dreaming of: a dedicated space to support her work as a natural fabric dye artist. Before the renovation, she was working out of her kitchen, constantly having to protect countertops and clean around daily life, all while handling highly staining materials like iron and turmeric.
We began by removing an old pre-fabricated shed and replacing it with a fully custom structure that includes running water, electrical, and an abundance of natural light. From the start, the client had a clear vision. She wanted a studio that felt like an organic extension of her home, both in style and function, and one that could stand up to the unique demands of her creative process.
Light and airflow were essential. We added operable windows, a skylight, and French doors to create a space that is bright and breathable. The French doors were thoughtfully placed in alignment with an existing concrete step, which helped integrate the new structure with the landscape. The client also plans to add flower boxes to the entry to further soften the space and connect it with her garden.
Inside, every material was selected with intentional care. To meet the need for durable and non-porous surfaces, we used luxury vinyl plank flooring and a stainless steel sink. To help the client feel confident in the flooring choice, we sent her several samples and encouraged her to test each one using her strongest staining materials. This hands-on process led to the selection of a warm cherry-toned plank that brings depth and character to the space while offering the durability she needed.
From initial vision to final installation, this project was centered around creating a creative art studio that is beautiful, practical, and personal. The result is a light-filled, thoughtfully designed space that supports her artistry and feels like it has always belonged.
