Fairview Berkeley Bathroom Remodel
BACKGROUND & DESIGN SOLUTIONS
The homeowners of this distinctive 1908 Craftsman Bungalow home approached HDR Remodeling with an equally unique request. Oftentimes, clients want to add or expand the bathrooms in their home, however, these homeowners were looking to reduce the footprint of the existing bathroom to carve out room for an additional bedroom closet and a separate hallway closet for storage.
The home has a lot of wood built-ins and lighting fixtures that characterize the Craftsman period and our clients wanted to maintain that character throughout the bathroom and in the closets.
This informed all of our material and product selections, including the 48’ Craftsman style Signature Hardware vanity cabinet and matching mirror. The oil-rubbed bronze industrial railroad light fixtures, Moen plumbing fixtures, and Kohler bath accessories add consistency to the theme. Adapting the bathroom for aging in place was important to our clients, so with this in mind we installed grab bars in the combination tub and shower that matched the rest of the fixtures.
To bring in the tones of the rest of the home, we installed a picture rail trim that matched the one in their dining room to create a vintage look. The picture trim allows for a two toned wall and also serves to tie together the various elements of the bathroom; the built-in shelving, the window trim, and the shower tiles.
The bathroom floor tiles are 3” hex tiles in the color Clover from Fireclay and are a special slip resistant material. For the subway tiles in the shower, we used handmade Fireclay tiles in the color Frost. For character and a splash of color, we kept a unique stained glass transom over the bathroom door. The results are a classic bathroom featuring intricate woodwork and handcrafted details that blend with the Craftsman charm of the home.
