BACKGROUND & DESIGN SOLUTIONS

The master bathroom was outdated and segmented, with a large skylit water closet, a dark, cramped shower, a soaking tub that took up too much space, and slate tiles that made the tub feel unnecessarily massive. The master vanity cabinets, mirrors and fluorescent soffit lighting also needed updating.

We swapped the location of the shower and water closet, taking advantage of the skylight and clerestory window to create a bright and expansive shower. Tile played an equally important role to create bold patterns. The tile selected for the master bathroom was inspired by the client’s memories of living in South Africa. The use of the bold black and white Clé Zenith tile on the shower floor and behind the toilet, ties these two spaces together in a strong graphic composition. Tile in the color Castle Denim is used as an accent tile in the soaking tub and the shower in a herringbone pattern. We used a more proportional soaking tub and lighter color Caesarstone tub deck to give the illusion of more space in the bathroom.

We replaced the existing vanity with custom cabinets to maximize storage. Above the vanity we updated the mirrors with medicine cabinets. We replaced the fluorescent soffit lighting with more discreet recessed lights, allowing the sconce lights to do most of the work. There was a structural post behind one of the master bath sinks, preventing us from locating a recessed medicine cabinet. We worked around this by finding a brand that offered matching medicine cabinets and mirrors, and created a composition of a mirror at each sink with a shared recessed medicine cabinet in the middle.

In the kid’s bathroom, small changes made a huge difference. While the aesthetics were in need of an upgrade, the location of all the bathroom elements worked for the space. Our clients wanted to utilize creative tilework and unique colors and patterns to create a playful and bold space. We selected Clé hexagonal cement tiles in Federal Blue, a solid blue tile, and Radar, the same tile with white radiating lines, and we played with the transition of these two tiles against the inside corner of the shower. Letting the tiles end in a sawtooth pattern further highlights these dramatic tiles. We complemented these blue tiles with satin brass metals for the vanity hardware and wall accessories. Pottery Barn’s vintage rounded medicine cabinets in brass tied all the components together.
