OAKLAND ADU GUIDELINES
NUMBER OF ADUS PERMITTED: One ADU is allowed per lot that contains one primary residence.
ADU SQUARE FOOTAGE: Detached ADUs cannot exceed 800 square feet or 75% of the primary residence, whichever is less. Attached ADUs have no square footage requirement.
TYPES OF ADUS ALLOWED: All types are allowed. (Detached, Attached, Junior)
LOT SIZE: No minimum requirement.
SETBACKS: ADU must be set at least four feet away from all property lines.
PARKING: All units require parking of equal value. Tandem parking in driveways is allowed. Parking requirement may not apply if ADUs is one half mile from public transportation.
STRUCTURE:
Roof cannot exceed 14 feet if sloped and 10 feet if flat.
Interior ceiling cannot exceed 10 feet.
ADU must be subordinate in design to the primary residence in terms of massing, height, and building footprint.
Architectural compatibility of property is required.
OWNERSHIP: Owners are not required to live on the property.
