Pantone® 2020 Color of the Year—“Classic Blue”
Most of us look to our homes to provide a place of calm, comfort, and peaceful permanence. So, it is only fitting as we close out a tumultuous decade and enter into a new one that Pantone has selected steadfast “Classic Blue” as their 2020 Color of the Year.
Appreciated for its understated mood, evocative of night skies and deep waters, HDR Remodeling’s Design Team loves working with this tranquil, versatile hue of blue—as do many of our clients. In fact, Classic Blue made an appearance in several recent remodeling projects.
Classic Blue to the Rescue
For a recent kitchen renovation, we re-envisioned a cramped, outdated space into an efficient space with lots of usable counters—and plenty of elbow room.
The neutral palette and crisp, transitional design is dominated by bright white cabinets and a matching tile backsplash briefly interrupted by cool gray quartz counters. The kitchen design needed an appropriate accent color to harmonize the neutral palette.
We customized and installed kitchen island cabinetry in Classic Blue and topped it with the same gray quartz counter material.
The contrast between the white perimeter cabinets and the deep blue island gives the kitchen a tailored finished look and subdued presence of color. Timeless, perfectly on-trend and, dare we say, classic.
Our client was delighted with our design prescience, after all—we recognized the beauty and elegance Classic Blue brought to the home before the purveyors of all things color made their announcement. Classic Blue appears with regularity in our design work and we’ve begun utilizing this peaceful yet versatile color whenever appropriate.
Classic Blue in the Watery Bathroom
Next, our client asked us not to play it safe with color when we went to remodel their bathroom, looking instead for bold and impactful. To pay homage to the Classic Blue in the kitchen—and to create a complementary theme in the home - we chose Pantone’s 2020 Color of the Year for the tile flooring.
Classic Blue is the perfect choice for watery bathroom environments, and we use it often to enliven the mood in these spaces through thoughtful material selection and application from floor to shower tiles and backsplashes.
We picked a distinctive, diamond-shaped porcelain tile glazed in Classic Blue to add a modern touch to a traditional bathroom design. With their shiny, reflective surfaces, the bright blue tiles contrasted in white grout, perfectly complement the modern porcelain fixtures, while achieving color cohesiveness throughout the home.
A Bridge to Modernity
During a recent whole home remodel, our clients remodeled multiple bathrooms. Their interior vision called for a transitional, architectural feel with a cohesive color palette throughout. To keep the new bathrooms coordinated yet distinctive, we chose Classic Blue and complementary hues in a variety of applications—from flooring to finishes.
We incorporated Classic Blue In the bathroom downstairs, where a bathtub was replaced with a walk-in shower. To unify the palette, we chose hand-painted, mid-century modern-inspired Navy blue floor tiles, paired with glossy “automotive finish” sink cabinetry in Classic Blue for an elegant finish.
Upstairs, the master bath received a lighter touch. Here, we employed Ice Gray, a gradient of blue, in translucent glass subway tiles, mated to matching shower tiles and vanity. A small skylight above the shower creates an ethereal, underwater mood as the sun moves across the sky, giving the room a tranquil, sea-like quality, surrounded in blue.
